Soulful Bean & Garam Masala Burger: Juicy, Warm, and Utterly Satisfying

Burgers have always held a special place in my heart, a passion ignited early on. Imagine this – my mom, a part of the lineage of Greek diner owners, posed a question before my 5th birthday: "What meal would you love to celebrate with?" You guessed it right – I wished for burgers and thus began my burger saga. Fast forward, my culinary journey welcomed the rise of vegetarian and vegan dining at The Palace at Osowa Sien. With each guest's dietary path, my burger mission expanded. The result? A burger that unites both worlds – a harmonious blend that satisfies carnivores and herbivores. From concept to creation, this burger evolved, eventually becoming my reliable go-to. It's not just incredibly delicious; it's a fiber-rich feast for the senses, encompassing a symphony of flavors, textures, and plant-based wonder.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Can (around 400 g wet-weight) cooked red kidney beans

  • 2 medium carrots, finely grated (or 1 very large)

  • 1 shallot, finely diced

  • 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, minced

  • 90 g oat flour (1 cup)

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 15 g (1 Tbsp.) Garam Masala spice (or other warming spices and herbs of choice)

  • Pinch of Asafetida (optional)

 Instructions:

 1. Blend with Care: Combine kidney beans, finely grated carrots, diced shallot, minced garlic, oat flour, a pinch of salt, pepper, and Garam Masala in a blender. Aim for a textured mixture. Alternatively, hand-mix for the same result.

 2. Shape the Patties: Divide the mixture into 4 portions and shape them into patties of even thickness. Cover with wax paper or plastic wrap.

 3. Chill and Rest: Refrigerate the patties for an hour or more to firm them up and amplify the flavors.

 4. Cook Thoughtfully:  Heat a skillet and lightly grease it with your chosen oil. Cook the patties for about 3-minutes per side, or until golden brown.

 5. Compose Your Burger: Build your burger with the patties on your chosen bun. Layer greens, tomatoes, pickles, sauces, and more for your unique creation.

These patties keep well for 3 - 4 days when uncooked, covered, and refrigerated.

Personal Note:

Inspired by the diverse dietary needs at The Palace at Osowa Sien, this burger brings together the joys of a classic burger with plant-based goodness. Whether you're a dedicated vegan or simply curious, indulge in this symphony of flavors and textures. It's a celebration of what plant-based cooking can achieve, and I'm eager to hear your verdict after the first bite.
